SUccess in the City 2014
The 2014 edition of SUccess in the City San Francisco gave Syracuse University Generation Orange alumni—those who graduated within the past 10 years—and current students the chance to meet, network, and score some good career advice from more than 30 alumni established in a wide variety of fields. Held July 31 at financial firm BlackRock, the event was hosted by BlackRock associate Sam Garetano ’11.
Special guest speaker Ruth Ross ’79 addressed the group, sharing information gleaned during her many years as a human resources executive. Author of the recently published book Coming Alive: The Journey to Reengage Your Life and Career, Ross spent 30 years as a senior human resources leader at top Fortune 100 companies, including 10 years as an executive vice president of human resources at Wells Fargo Bank. She retired from the bank in 2011 to start her own company, R Squared Resources, focused on the critical business imperative of employee engagement, a significant factor for companies to retain top talent. Before relocating to San Francisco in 1996, she worked in New York for such companies as Citibank, PaineWebber, American Express, and Estee Lauder, where she ran human resources for major divisions.

Chad Rittgers ’01, president of the SU Alumni Club of Northern California, was instrumental in inviting Ross to speak at the event. “Ruth’s many years of experience has given her great insight into what components make a company successful, such as employee engagement,” he says. “GenO alumni are at a point in their lives where major decisions are being made that will impact their future careers. Ruth’s presentation, which helped them understand the importance of employee engagement, gives them an edge on the competition. And they’ll also have a head start in their decision-making process to be sure they are choosing the right career path for the right reasons, setting up a recipe for success.”
Alex Regenstreich ′08 attended the event and was pleased with the experience. “I met such great people,” says the iSchool alumna. “Ruth and I had coffee the following week; I made a couple of new friends, and saw old friends. It was a splendid event.”
"My sincerest thanks to Sam Garetano for hosting us at BlackRock, and Chad Rittgers for his leadership in making this event so successful," says Matthew R. Manfra, assistant vice president of Alumni Engagement. “It was wonderful to have Ruth Ross as our guest speaker, and so many outstanding advisors who shared their knowledge with our newest alumni. All who attended helped spread the power of the Orange Network within the region."
